Ready:
"Teach us to number our days carefully so that we may develop wisdom in our hearts.” —Psalm 90:12
Set:
Every day is important to an athlete. It might be a day of preparation for a big competition. It might be another mid-season practice or any of the hundreds of days between the two. When you are a competitor, each day matters. Your mindset and attitude in approaching those days matters, too.
In Psalm 90, Moses, the author of this psalm, is around 120 years old. He lived a lot of days! He grew up in the Egyptian Pharaoh’s house. He had everything he wanted. Later he was an outcast and worked as a shepherd in the wilderness. When he was 80 years old, he got a new assignment from God to lead the Hebrew people out of Egypt to the Promised Land. Moses does do this and it takes forty years. It’s near the end of this that he wrote “teach us to number our days carefully so that we may develop wisdom in our hearts.”
What he’s saying is that each day carries weight, importance, value and purpose. When we understand that we can view each day with wisdom. What exactly is wisdom? Wisdom is the ability to know something accurately. To then come to the point of understanding, and finally to act appropriately each day in each situation.
This is why it is so important for athletes to see that each day does matter. You are not floating down the river of life, in an inner tube with no control. You are in a motorboat that has an engine and you are navigating the river and taking the boat where it needs to go. You have learned by daily experience of how to drive the boat, where to drive the boat, and you have gained skill and ability over time to drive it appropriately.
This is exactly what Moses was implying about life and wisdom. Don’t just float through life, but see the value, importance and significance of each day, and gain wisdom to navigate life by being coachable. The payoff in life is wisdom. What a reward!
Every day is a teacher. It’s up to you to learn.
Go:
What is your approach to each day? Is it to float through it as each hour comes and goes?
Do you try to learn and be teachable each day?
Is wisdom appealing to you? Do you want to gain it and use it for daily decisions?
Workout:
Overtime:
“Lord Jesus, You are the God of wisdom. You said that if anyone lacked wisdom they should ask and You would give it to them. Teach me and help me to learn from each day to gain Your wisdom. Guide me through each day to see the value and importance of it. Thank You for loving me and caring for me like this. In Your great name I pray, amen.”
