Spiritual maturity begins with what you chose to believe.

Ready:

“Finally brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable – if there is any moral excellence and if there is anything praiseworthy – dwell on these things.” —Philippiens 4:8

Set  Before he became a Super Bowl MVP, former Los Angeles Rams quarterback Kurt Warner stocked grocery shelves. He fought thoughts like, “You’re too old. You missed your shot.” But he chose to dwell on what was true—that God’s calling wasn’t finished. His comeback reminds every athlete that victory begins when we focus on what’s true, not opinion.

What was true for Kurt Warner, was true for the Philippians and is true for us today. We overcome anxiety by fixing our minds on what’s real, tested and can’t be hidden. Anxiety tears us in opposite directions; God’s truth pulls us back together. His truth defines who you are. The same God who knit you together, searched your heart and knew your thoughts before a word was spoken (Psalm 139) declares that you are awe-inspired and wonderfully made, seen when unseen, designed on purpose for His purpose. Grounded in His identity, you no longer chase illusions painted by comparison or crowd noise. You stand on the bedrock of God’s purpose, not shifting opinion.

Spiritual maturity begins with what you choose to believe. When your thoughts rest on God’s truth, lies lose their grip and peace returns—to your game and to your heart.

Paul reveals how the Holy Spirit trained him (and us) to deal with the anxiety of tough times and difficult people: we turnover (to God) what we cannot control and assume control (with Spirit-help) over what we can control (see Philippians 4:6-8). On and off the field, athletes battle lies like, “You blew it. You don’t belong here.” Paul tells us to dwell on what is true. Your body may not mirror airbrushed images, but you reflect wonder and divine intent. Emotions may waver momentarily, but they don’t change your calling. Your story was written before your first practice. You’re not copy-and-paste—you’re handcrafted by Almighty God.

GO:

  1. When have you felt pulled between God’s truth and the world’s opinions? What helped you overcome negative thoughts?

  2. How can you grow stronger in learning God’s truth this week? What role do Scripture, prayer, and trusted friends play?

Overtime

“My God and my Coach, You made me awesome! I am wonderfully and intentionally designed. I am uniquely Yours for amazing purposes. Keep me from getting distracted by sideshows and crowd noise. Amen.”
