Ready:

"God, save me by your name, and vindicate me by your might! God, hear my prayer; listen to the words from my mouth.”Psalm 54:1-2

Set:

The context for David writing this Psalm can be found in 1 Samuel 23:14-24. David had a consistent opposer named Saul who spent most of his time being physically, mentally and emotionally abusive to David. Each time Saul came against him, David took it to the Lord. He doesn’t hold back in his emotions (good or bad) or his questions. David shows us the importance of taking it all to God.

In any competition, when is a timeout called? Most likely in key situations: to stop the clock, to stop momentum, to regroup, to plan out a play, to rest players, or to contest a call. We can see a spiritual application here as well. David was calling a timeout in a key situation. Just like in our lives, there are times where we need prayer to regain proper focus, to stop the enemy’s plans, to avoid sin, to plan our steps or to rest.

The original Hebrew for the word “name,” refers to God’s character, reputation and authority. By appealing to God’s name, David is putting everything on the unchanging, firm and timeless nature of God. Instead of looking inward and trying to save himself, or looking to others for deliverance, David called a timeout to go to the Coach he could always rely on.

The book of Psalms shows the faithful character of the Coach. God is always looking our way to give us a timeout. He’s keeping His eye on His athletes and the tactics of the opponent. He can be trusted, and He wants us to trust Him. He loves for His creation to depend on Him fully. We don’t have to scream or yell to get His attention, all it takes is a heart postured towards Him in dependence and humility.

Go:

  1. Where in your life do you need to call a timeout in order to regain focus, to stop the enemy’s momentum in your life, to calm and regroup yourself, to avoid sin, to plan your next steps or to rest?

  2. Will you choose to accept the wisdom the Coach gives and follow through with His play?

Workout:

Psalm 37:7

Overtime:

“Heavenly Father, thank You for Your heart towards us. Thank You for being willing to give us a timeout to help us regroup, rest and refocus so we can continue on. Thank You for being the perfect Father who is always listening and with us. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
