Ready:
"And let us consider one another in order to provoke love and good works, not neglecting to gather together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day approaching.” —Hebreus 10:24-25
Set:
In baseball, the squeeze play happens when the batter attempts a sacrifice bunt with a runner on third base. The goal is to have the runner on third base score. One key to the success of a squeeze play is practicing the play with each player, both the batter and the runner, to ensure both understand how to execute the play.
In our life with as Christian athletes, we are encouraged to understand and know the way of Jesus Christ so that we can encourage others to live that same way. Hebrews 10:24-25 is clear on what that way is and what our approach should be to encourage others on that way. The way is the way of love and good works. It includes being together with other Christians regularly. You can do this as part of a church or an FCA Huddle.
It also includes loving God and others through how you respond to them with faithfulness, humility and service. Being faithful to God is a full daily commitment to be with him, to become more like him, and to behave like he does. The way we show love to others is by serving them in humility.
The result of a well-executed squeeze play is a run scored. In a similar way, as we live a life of love and good deeds and being together, we are waiting for the final play, “the day” is what it’s called. “The day” is when Jesus returns and makes all things right and all things new. This day will be the greatest win and victory.
Go:
Have you been part of a special play that won the game? What was that like?
Are you around other Christian athletes who help one another love more and do good works? How does it help you in your growth to be around others who inspire you?
What should it look like to live for the day Jesus returns?
Workout:
Overtime:
“Jesus, You are returning someday, and I want to live in such a way that honors You and honors others. Increase my love and faithfulness to You and to others. Help me increase in doing good works, all of which are motivated by love for You. Thank You for being with me always. In Your name I pray, amen.”
