“'Aren’t two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s consent. But even the hairs of your head have all been counted. So don’t be afraid, you are worth more than many sparrows.'” —Matthew 10:29-30 

Set: 

In 2025, three National Basketball Association franchises sold for record amounts. The Los Angeles Lakers sold for $10 billion dollars, making it the largest sale of a sports team in global history. The Boston Celtics sold for $6.1 billion dollars, and the Minnesota Timberwolves sold for $1.5 billion dollars. The amounts are staggering. The sheer value of just these three professional teams speaks to the billions of dollars that are poured into the world of sports and competition every year.  

Are they worth it? Are these three teams really worth billions of dollars? Those investing sure think so. Those recruiting players and building the team believe it. The fans purchasing jerseys and tickets and streaming services to watch are certain they are worth it. I once heard it said that value is determined by however much someone is willing to pay. 

Do you know how much you are worth? What is your value? 

Athletes and coaches often question their worth and value. Sometimes our worth and value is assigned to us based on our performance or our win/loss record. Sometimes it is assigned by Name, Image, Likeness deals or fan support. That sort of worth is fleeting and temporary.  

Jesus tells us in Matthew 10 that our value is already determined. In chapter 10, Jesus is encouraging the twelve disciples as He prepares to send them out to share the Good News. In His encouragement, He reminds these twelve ordinary men that they “are worth more than many sparrows.” Of course a person is worth more than sparrows! That seems like a no brainer, but Jesus reminds them (and us) that God knows when each sparrow falls. In fact, He knows the number of hairs on your head. You see, God determined our worth when He sent His own Son, Jesus, to take the punishment for our sins so we could have a relationship with Him. 

That’s how much you are worth to God. If value is determined by however much someone is willing to pay, then your worth is priceless. Live in that truth and cling to the only One who truly understands your value.
