Ready:

“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”Galatians 6:9

Set:

In the sport of volleyball, a third set is needed when two teams have played evenly, each team winning one set. The third set is then needed to see which team wins the match. Athletes must work well together, a synergy is necessary, using a specific play strategy based on individual players skills. If a team loses the first set, they have the chance to win the second set, forcing the need for the third set for the chance to win. Coaches and players use the first set to observe to learn the strengths and weaknesses of their opponent. Adjustments are then made for the second set to maximize the potential for winning. There is a lot of adapting and responding to gain the advantage.

In our daily lives as Christian athletes, there is an opponent, who prowls around seeking to destroy us. We need to learn the strategies and tactics of evil so that we can be alert and aware. We need to understand our enemy, the devil. He wants us to disobey God and do wrong. His strategy is to try and gain the upper hand and control our thinking and behavior. There is a clear and powerful way for us to be guarded and protected from him. This happens for us by Jesus Christ and His presence with us.

The Bible gives us strategies on how to overcome evil. Romans 12:21 says, “Do not be conquered by evil, but conquer evil with good.” This is how we are instructed to strategically respond to evil and the evil one. Just like in the volleyball sets, and staying at it and not giving up, we are to continue doing what is good. Galatians 6:9 is specific and clear about our response. We are to continually do good, not stopping, not quitting and not getting weary. Stay at doing the good and right things.

Go:

  1. What are the good and right things you do regularly?

  2. What kinds of results happen when you do good?

  3. Who is close to you who can help you stay at it to not stop doing good?

Workout:

1 Corinthians 15:58
Hebrews 12:3
Isaiah 40:30-31

Overtime:

“Lord Jesus, thank You for having all power and authority over evil. I want to do more in following Your example of doing good. I need Your help daily. I want to be victorious and have Your strength to overcome evil. Help me see the good I need to do. I trust in You. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
