Ready: “So that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and growing in the knowledge of God.” —Послание колоссянам 1:10
Set:
At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, gymnast Simone Biles shocked the world by stepping away from competition. On the biggest stage, with the highest expectations, she succumbed to the weight of that moment. One thing was clear: expectation pressure is real.
Coaches expect execution. Parents expect effort. Teammates expect consistency. Fans expect results. And somewhere in all of it, your own voice whispers, “Don’t let them down.”
But here’s the truth: your identity as God’s child also brings expectations. It’s those expectations that matter most because God’s expectations are different. They are goal-oriented, not perfection-driven. They are designed to grow you, not crush you. Paul doesn’t say, “Live up to everyone’s expectations.” He says, “Walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him.” Your identity changes everything. The goal isn’t to satisfy every voice. It’s to discern God’s voice and excel in the calling He’s given you. Not every expectation deserves your energy.
Practice these three filters so that expectation pressures don’t control you:
Question the Voice: God’s voice emphasizes growth, not perfection. When expectations feel like demands instead of direction, it’s probably the wrong voice.
Confirm Your Calling: Not every expectation belongs to you. If confusion, frustration or constant approval-seeking result, you may be carrying something outside your calling.
Share the Weight: God never calls you to carry pressure alone. Growth happens in community. Allow teammates, coaches and mentors who recognize His voice to share your expectations.
Expectation pressure is heaviest when you carry it alone, or when you carry what God never assigned to you. When your aim is to please God, everything else finds its place. You don’t need to meet every expectation—you need to honor the right one.
Go:
Where do you feel the greatest weight of expectations right now? Who is placing it on you?
Which expectations are stretching your growth right now? Which are burdens?
Which expectation in your life right now do you need to re-evaluate through these filters?
Workout:
Overtime:
“My God and my Coach, steady my heart in moments when expectations are burdens. Let me hear Your voice and grow into Your call. Let me live to please You above expectation pressures. Amen.”
