Ready:

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law." -Galatians 5:22-23

Set:

Athletes need a healthy diet. Proper nutrition is key to optimal performance. People of sport spend a lot of money to get the right foods, snacks and fluids to build high levels of energy to compete. A proper diet is essential to your energy and strength, your ability to heal and recover after workouts and competitions. A core aspect of a healthy diet is the personal discipline to maintain this proper diet. It can’t be every other week, or every other day, but every single day of doing it right.

At the deepest level, in our journey with Jesus, an even greater emphasis should be given to proper spiritual life and health. What good is it if we give all the attention and detail to our physical life and starve our mental, emotional and spiritual life? The spiritual part is far more important, for it has eternal impact and value.

Notice the fruits (results) from the verses above: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law”. Just like in our physical lives, the setting of proper health and nutrition goals and action steps results in things we can see, so too in our spiritual lives we must set proper disciplines, goals and actions of discipleship (our growing, developing, and maturing) in Christ to have the fruit (results) of the Spirit. Some of these proper disciplines are daily Bible reading and study, prayer, talking to others about our trust and faith in Jesus, even baptism and communion.

We work hard at developing a healthy lifestyle with a proper diet and good nutrition. We build a balanced diet, good routines of rest and sleep. We give our body what it needs. We must work even harder at the inner life of developing a healthy spirit led life. Both have benefits and results. May the Lord Jesus guide us and strengthen us to gain a healthy life.

Go:

  1. How would you describe your normal diet? Would you say it is healthy and good?

  2. How would you describe your spiritual health? Would you say it is healthy?

Workout:

Romans 12:21
Ephesians 5:1-2
Colossians 3:17

Overtime:

“Lord Jesus, thank You for giving me Your Holy Spirit to help me be spiritual healthy. Help me be fruitful by allowing the Holy Spirit to lead me, guide me and empower me. Thank You that You created the opportunity and potential for a strong healthy spiritual life. I trust in You. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
