Ready:

"Who do I have in heaven but you? And I desire nothing on earth but you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart, my portion forever.” – Psalm 73:25-26

Set:

Asaph, the author of this psalm, is going through it in this psalm. He has been struggling in his understanding of why the wicked get an easy life on this side of eternity and those who love God experience heartache and tough experiences. Throughout the Psalm, he shares his heart with God: the good, bad and ugly. At about the middle, his heart begins to turn back to the Lord, which leads us to our verses for today. He realizes eternity is worth focusing on rather than the temporary pleasures and difficult circumstances of earthly life.

Could we truly get to a point where we can say with Asaph, I desire nothing on earth but God? Asaph was realistic in what he said after that because we know our flesh and heart will fail in our desires. But what a wonderful goal to desire nothing on earth but Him. He is our One thing. Above our sport, above our relationships, above our selfish wants and desires, just Him. How do we get there? It is first in our surrendering of our ways to His, and second in what we pursue after that.

We see it modeled in sport continually. If basketball is our sport. We eat, breathe and sleep basketball. We pursue basketball with everything: practicing in free time, memorizing stats, buying new shoes, jerseys and balls, researching drills and different plays, etc. It’s a pursuit.

Now instead of basketball what would it look like to pursue God? To desire nothing on earth but Him. In Jeremiah 29:13, God says we will seek Him and find Him when we search for Him with all our hearts. A continued pursuit with our full hearts. Not a perfect pursuit, but a continual one. A pursuit you start out with in the morning and end with in the evening.

You’ve heard the combination before: discipline, desire, delight. Your pursuit of God might start off feeling like a discipline, but as you continue to seek Him, a desire will grow in your heart. As that desire grows through obedience, it will eventually become a delight. Asaph said God was his one thing and I want Him to be my one thing too.
