Set:
Imagine an athlete left his family in a small country for an opportunity to go play international ball. He plays his heart out for the duration of his contract and then when the time comes for it to be over, he returns back home. Of course there are sad parts to it: that season of ball and life is over but the reunion that awaits back home is far sweeter. After all, it’s relationship that truly satisfies our hearts, not sports or anything this earth could ever offer us.
Psalm 116:15 is all about perspective. If we can change our perspective, we can see things more clearly as the Creator sees. My grandmother lived the last 7-8 years of her life in a nursing home. She had Parkinson’s disease and Dementia, so she had her good days and her bad days. One afternoon we went to visit her, and she was having a really bad day mentally. My sisters, my dad and I sat with her in the dining room among the other residents. Some talked, some stared, some were asleep. It felt so dark there. My grandmother just stared off into space as we tried to have a conversation with her.
I looked around at those in the room and then at my grandmother and thought, “God, you’re not even here. These people have worked their whole lives, loved and cared for their people and now they’re all here alone and their bodies and minds have given up on them. You’ve left them here.” In that same moment, an elderly woman stood up from reading her book, walked over to the piano and began playing the most beautiful hymn. She continued to play until my heart found perspective. He was there; He hadn’t forgotten them. And once my heart received that, she went and sat back down at her table and continued reading her book.
God’s perspective is trustworthy, and it is for our most good.
