Read the Field

Devotionals

Reading the field or court is a skill built over time.

Ready:

"Flee from youthful passions, and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.” —提摩太后书 2:22

Set:

What Lionel Messi does in soccer matches is quite amazing. He’s not running all over the place, chasing every ball. He’s walking, watching, waiting and moving to strategic places for the ball to come to him or for him to go meet the pass. He knows what the right steps and movements are, and then at the right time, he goes into action and does incredible feats in soccer. He has practiced reading the field from his start in the sport. What would it be like in your sport if you read the court or field well?

Like reading the field or court well, our relationship with Jesus is about making clear and accurate observations of Jesus and the Bible and then implementing them in our lives. The same question applies here: what would it be like in your daily life, if you read the instructions of Scripture clearly and accurately, and then lived your life that way?

2 Timothy 2:2 applies to everyone, whether you are just getting started in your life with Jesus, or if you’ve been walking with Him for a long time. This is just one example of God’s Word giving us clear boundaries to help us read the field of life. It tells what to move away from and what to move toward. Move away from passions (the things that draw us away from God) and go toward righteousness, faith, love and peace. The good news is that we do this moving away from and moving towards with others who are doing the same. Reading the field of life and following this Biblical instruction is to be done with others – our teammates in Christ.

Reading the field or court takes years of experience. The same goes for reading the Bible and applying to your life. Don’t try to do it all at once but take one verse, one chapter at a time and find teammates to do it with you.

Go:

  1. Who do you think reads the field or court the best on your team?

  2. What can you do to improve at applying biblical principles to your life?

  3. Who will go with you on this daily workout? Make sure you are doing this with others.

Workout:

提摩太前书 6:11
提摩太前书 4:12
雅各书 4:7

Overtime:

“Lord Jesus, thank You for being the foundation of my life. Thank You for providing fundamentals for how I should live my life. Help me get closer and closer to You and to follow Your advice and guidance. Bring others around me who also live this way. I need Your strength, courage and wisdom. Thank you for loving me this way. In Your name I pray, amen.”
