Intentionally making time for God isn't wasting time.

Ready:

"If you keep from desecrating the Sabbath from doing whatever you want on my holy day; of you call the sabbath a delight, and the holy day of the LORD honorable; if you honor it, not going your own ways, seeking your own pleasure, or talking business; then you will delight in the LORD, and I will make you ride over the heights of the land, and let you enjoy the heritage of your father Jacob.” —以赛亚书 58:13-14

Set:

After practices, I was tired, hungry and ready to go home. My parents were usually waiting in the bleachers or parked outside. I needed a ride home, but they delighted in our drive time home together.

Sometimes my father would ask, "Want to grab a burger before we head home?" During the next hour we talked about school, sports, friends and life. No trophies were awarded. No homework was finished. Yet we both left encouraged. Why? Because sometimes the greatest gift is time spent together.

To many, Sabbath rest means "stop working." While that's true, it's only part of the picture. When God finished creating the world, He rested (Genesis 2). But God wasn't tired. His rest didn’t step away from Adam; it stepped toward him. The first Sabbath was God's invitation to celebrate time together. Sabbath wasn't created to overcome fatigue. It was created to nurture fellowship. God wanted fellowship with His creation.

We live at a relentless pace. School, sports, activities, social media and endless notifications fill every moment. Yet God designed us for more than activity. Sabbath is more than a day off. It's God's invitation to “hang out”. Relationship with God refreshes and realigns our soul. Intentionally making time for God isn't wasting time; it's investing in the relationship that shapes every part of life.

This week, create intentional time to enjoy God. Put down your phone. Step away from the noise. Go for a walk, sit outside, read Scripture, pray or simply spend time with your Creator. The goal isn't merely relaxation. It's the refreshment and realignment that come from walking with God. It's not another assignment. It's time with Someone who delights in being with you.

Go:

  1. Why is Sabbath a delight not simply a rest?

  2. What does “hanging out” with God mean to you?

Workout:

创世记 2:2-3
马可福音 6:3
约翰福音 15:4-5

Overtime:

“My God and my Coach, thank You for inviting me to spend time with you. I fill my life with activity and often miss Your invitation to hang out. I have so many questions! Teach me to understand Your purpose for my life. Amen.”
