Brotherly Shove

Devotionals

August 19, 2026

God calls us to huddle up, lock in and push forward in a Spirit-driven Brotherly Shove.

Ready:

"Now I urge you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree in what you say, that there be no divisions among you, and that you be united with the same understanding and the same conviction.” 1 Corinthians 1:10

Set:

For years, the quarterback sneak was a solo effort. One guy. One push. One shot. But the Philadelphia Eagles flipped the script with the “Tush Push”—or what fans now call the “Brotherly Shove”. Unlike the old-school sneak, this play isn’t about one man—it’s about everyone moving as one. Linemen surge low. Running backs push high. The quarterback plows forward. By 2022, the Eagles had converted over 90% of short-yardage attempts. NFL execs began discussions to ban the play. Why? It was simply unstoppable!    There’s a spiritual lesson buried in that play! It’s not just church advice—it’s spiritual strategy. In the same way that the Brotherly Shove fails when linemen break assignments, our spiritual momentum stalls when believers pull in different directions. The mission moves forward when our spiritual gifts work together. While we may go different directions off the field, when we break the huddle on the field we are a single unit aligned behind Jesus, His Good News, and His call to love, serve and stand firm.    Athletes know that strong teams aren’t built on solo heroes. A team is welded together by the gridiron of trust, timing and toughness. Churches call themselves a “community”, that is really the same as seeing the church as a “team”. We weren’t meant to fight through life’s “fourth-and-goal” moments alone. God calls us to huddle up, lock in, and push forward in a Spirit-driven brotherly shove.

Go:

  1. Why do you think the “Brotherly Shove” works better than a traditional quarterback sneak?

  2. Paul calls believers to be “united with the same conviction.” What might that look like on your team or in your circle of friends?

  3. What’s one way you can “push with” someone this week—by encouraging, praying, or stepping into their struggle with them?

Workout:

John 17:20-23
Romans 12:5

Overtime:

"My God and my Coach, You rescued me when I was alone and team-less. Now, make me part of Your eternal Team with Spirit-powered trust, timing and toughness. Mold me into your unstoppable Team. In Jesus’ name, amen."
