Equip with Scripture
Are you a disciple of Jesus? The term was traditionally used to describe someone who followed another for the purpose of learning. Think of discipleship in two parts: the source and the subject or the teacher and the teaching. Not only will a disciple learn the teaching, but they will become like their teacher (Luke 6:40). To be equipped is to conform to the words and ways of Jesus. To do this, God gives us His Word.
The Source: Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). Following Christ as a disciple is about learning a way of life laid out in the commands of God, but it is rooted in a relationship with our Savior who loves us. God’s Word points us to a person, Jesus Christ.
The Subject: All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16-17). In other words, the Bible has authority, is without error, and is necessary and sufficient for disciples to learn and grow in their relationship with Jesus.
Disciples of Jesus are people of the Word! We are to be immersed in it. To do so is to be like a tree planted by streams of water that bears fruit in every season (Psalm 1). However, sometimes studying God’s Word can feel intimidating. Therefore, disciples should be equipped with a simple pattern for studying the Bible. FCA recommends using Discovery Bible Study (DBS) because it helps people to discover truths of God and apply them to their life.
The Word of God transforms lives. Knowing this, the most important question you can ask someone is, “Will you read the Bible with me?”
