Ready:
"Am I now trying to persuade people, or God? Or am I striving to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ." —Galatians 1:10
Set:
At a high school football game, a kicker missed the game-winning field goal. The crowd groaned. Teammates tried to encourage him, but criticism came fast—whispers from the stands, cruel posts online, even harsh words from his dad. For many athletes, the hardest hits don’t come from opponents but from critics—sometimes even from family.
Handling criticism—deserved or not—is part of growing strong in the Spirit. God gives us three anchors: His grace, His truth, and His people. Truth alone can cut. Grace alone can feel shallow. His people—safe friends—listen without judgment, speak truth with compassion, and walk beside us as we grow.
Counseling and coping tools reveal wounds, but only the Spirit can heal them. Paul wrote, “If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ” (Gal. 1:10). Godly partners help us sift truth from criticism and apply it with grace. With grace, truth and safe people, criticism becomes fuel for growth.
Pastor Charles Swindoll said, “If you never get criticized, chances are you aren’t getting anything done.” Chasing dreams invites critics. But every dropped ball or missed flag is a chance to learn. Carefully chosen mentors help us take thoughts captive. Disciplines like prayer, silence and Scripture steady us as we “work out our salvation… for it is God who works in you” (Phil. 2:12–13).
Think of it this way: we’re not motorboats powering ourselves, nor rafts drifting with the current. We’re sailboats—dependent on the Spirit’s wind, yet active in trimming sails and steering the rudder. Growth happens when we harness His power through discipline and safe companions.
Go:
When has criticism felt heavier than the game?
How do grace, truth, and safe friends help you grow instead of shutting down?
A sailboat needs the Spirit’s wind but still your effort. What discipline helps you catch His wind?

"My God and my Coach, I’m overwhelmed when people judge me with harsh criticism. Give me “safe people” who listen and understand my hurt. Let me see Jesus’ grace and truth in their words even when uncomfortable change is needed. Let my mistakes become my momentum. Amen. "
