We’re all works in progress and we all need to practice.

READY

“Do what you have learned and received and heard from me, and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you." - Philippians 4:9

SET

Do you remember when you first fell in love with sports? You learned all that you could, practiced every waking moment and talked about it constantly. Out of the blue one day, my youngest son came to me and said he wanted to try baseball. He went to one clinic for new players and loved it. When he persisted in asking to play catch, we got him what he needed to keep practicing: a batting tee and a net, a glove and he even watched baseball videos. He seemed truly driven to do what he needed to do to be a better baseball player.  In Philippians 4, Paul lists three things Christians can do to grow in their faith:

  • Be full of joy in the Lord and praise Him (Philippians 4:5).

  • Pray about everything (Philippians 4:6-7).

  • Keep thinking about excellent and praiseworthy things (Philippians 4:8).

Then in verse 9, Paul says to practice all they’ve learned. All these things he listed are taught throughout the Bible, which makes them important principles to understand. But here’s the great part: all these things Paul listed are things that can be practiced. Paul is right; we should practice them!   Singing a worship song you heard, lifting the smallest things in life to God in prayer, and spending time in the Word and being mindful of what you watch are ways to practice your faith.

We’re all works in progress and we all need to practice on ourselves. Let’s be people who encourage one another to keep at it.  Together, we can get better!
