Ready:
Let your eyes look forward; fix your gaze straight ahead. Carefully consider the path for your feet, and all your ways will be established.” - Proverbs 4:25-26
Set:
Swimmers fixate on the cross. Why? At the end of every lane, a black cross is embedded in the wall for flip turns. Lose sight of it and you either flip too early—losing momentum—or too late—slamming your heels into the gutter. The cross helps swimmers time their turns with precision. Drills sharpen that instinct. Discipline builds that habit. Focus perfects the turn.
In Proverbs 4, Solomon steps into coach mode: “Fix your eyes. Ponder your path. Establish your steps.” Like a good trainer, he’s not just calling out reps—he’s building a mindset. But today’s athletes face nonstop distractions: screens, injuries, stress, crowd noise, peer pressure. It’s easy to drift. That’s why Solomon warns us: be intentional. Adjust your pull. Time your breathing. Focus on what matters most.
Olympic champion Mark Spitz once said, “If you fail to prepare, you’re prepared to fail.” Proverbs agrees. The Hebrew word for ponder means “to weigh” or “level.” Great swimmers do this every stroke—making micro-adjustments based on what they see. Focus fuels preparation. Pondering adds perspective. When we evaluate each move, we avoid wasted motion and stay in rhythm with God’s purpose.
We’re training to become more like Jesus. Like swimmers scanning for the cross, we fix our eyes on Him. We don’t drift aimlessly or stare at others in the next lane. We stay mindful. We measure our strokes. With time and practice, right choices repeated become spiritual muscle memory—helping us walk in truth without second-guessing our steps.
Eyes up. Focus forward. Faith planted. A swimmer’s victory begins long before the wall. So does ours. Don’t look down. Don’t look around. Lock in. Think ahead. Live aligned. In your lane and in your life, stay cross-focused.
Fix your eyes. Ponder your path. Establish your steps. Focus on the cross.

Overtime:
My Father and my Coach, let my eyes search and find You every morning. Let me weigh Your words and follow Your lead. Establish Your truth in my heart so that my first instinct is to trust You. Focus my walk. In Your name, amen.
