We live in a world where having purpose is discussed in every circle and every culture. There are self-help books, master classes, Ted Talks, etc.—all geared to help us find our purpose. It’s as though we know we were created for something bigger, something higher, a Greater Purpose. As followers of Jesus, we know that purpose isn’t ‘something’ but rather Someone. The world is looking for a greater purpose without seeking the Greater God.
“God made you on purpose, for a purpose.”
When we try to find our purpose without God, the Purpose-giver, we are trying to play the game of life without the ball. We can prepare our team, line up our players in the correct position, and teach them how to run the plays, but without a ball that gives the game purpose, the preparation is void.
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10). God is the center of what we do. He is what gives us purpose. Having a Greater Purpose isn’t just about our careers and professional lives; the Greater Purpose includes our faith (our relationship with God), our family (our relationships with spouse and children), and our finances (our relationship with money). The Lord has a purpose in all of these.
If we look at the life and legacy of King David, we see that God led him and his family to a Greater Purpose that included the lineage of our Savior, Jesus. But as God led David in this purpose, David had to learn how to follow, and so do we. The key to finding our purpose in faith, family, and finances is following and surrendering to God. In the following sections, we’ll look at instances throughout David’s life when God led him, what he learned along the way, and what we can learn from it.
The God that David followed is the same God that sent His Son to this earth to live a perfect life, die a necessary death, and rise three days later, defeating both sin and death. John 17:18 reminds us, “As you [God the Father] sent me [Jesus] into this world, I also have sent them into the world.” God is calling each of us to something greater than winning games. Our Greater Purpose is to live as men and women after God’s own heart, just like David.
