“We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.” —Romans 8:28
Set:
It’s 2009, a playoff game. Angels versus the Boston Red Sox. Late innings. Tie score. Runner on third. The stadium is electric—everyone expecting the swing, the home run, the moment that ends it.
Instead, the coach, Mike Scioscia, puts down the sign for a “suicide squeeze”. The hitter squares around, executes the perfect bunt and gives himself up. He’s thrown out at first. In the box score, it’s an out. No highlight. No headline. But the 3rd base runner crosses home plate. The run scores. The game is won. Years later, most fans can’t name the batter. In hindsight, that moment speaks volumes: the victory didn’t come from power—it came through self-sacrificing service. That’s how great teams win and it’s how God shapes His people.
Paul explains this truth in Romans 8:28. When he says that all things “work together” (synergei) he means that they are synchronized to achieve one goal. God doesn’t waste moments; He weaves them together. Looking back at this week of devotions leads in one direction:
Availability — is being willing to take the sign
Preparation — is executing training under pressure
Position — is stepping into the moment you’re given
Redirection — is surrendering the swing you wanted
Sent — is carrying out the call for the good of others
Individual moments may not feel like wins. Some feel costly. Some confusing. But God’s synchronized foresight is unveiled in hindsight. Outcomes aren’t always achievement—but they’re always about service.
Service doesn’t need a stat sheet. Athletes live by power rankings—minutes played, points scored, recognition earned. But God’s power ranking is different. He asks: Were you available? Did you step into training? Were you prepared to serve? Were you faithful when sent?
Hindsight reveals that nothing was accidental. God wasn’t building highlight reels—He was forming servants.
Go:
When has obedience or service felt like a loss in the moment—but later made sense in hindsight? What did God reveal?
Looking back over the week of devotions, which area—availability, preparation, position, redirection, or being sent—has God been developing most in you right now? Why?
God’s power ranking values faithful service over visibility. What is one practical way you can choose service this week—even if no one notices?

Overtime:
“My Lord and my Coach, help me remember that availability isn’t random. Preparation is never wasted. Position is placement. Redirection isn’t failure. And being sent is about serving. Your foresight is revealed in hindsight, and Your power ranking is faithful service. Amen.”
