Lifted By a Good Word

Life weighs us down, but God lifts us up—often through Spirit-inspired words.

Ready:

“Anxiety in a person’s heart weighs it down, but a good word cheers it up.”  - Proverbs 12:25

Set:

I’ll never forget the day my swim coach pushed me to break through a swim barrier. It wasn’t at a meet—it was about the grind at the end of a workout.  I don’t remember my final time. I don’t even remember what stroke I swam. But I remember Dan, a teammate, pacing me stride-for-stroke along the pool deck.  Whipping his towel overhead.  Yelling, “You’ve got this! You can do it!” His words lifted me. An energy drink might “give you wings,” but Dan’s words energized and lifted my hope.

Life weighs us down, but God lifts us up—often through Spirit-inspired words.

Anxiety hits more than the mind. It’s mirrored in body language. Slumped shoulders. Deep sighs. Distracted stares. The Hebrew in Proverbs 12:25 literally pictures the heart “stooping,” — bent over from internal pressure. It’s a reminder that today’s teens stoop under crushing loads: raging hormones, peer drama, performance pressure, body image lies, and the constant distortion of social media. College looms. Comparison suffocates. Standing tall can feel impossible.

But God doesn’t just diagnose the pain—He offers healing through His Spirit and our words. Solomon says, “a good word cheers it (the heart) up.” That Hebrew word—ṭôb—refers to words of goodness, beauty, joy, and truth. These aren’t flippant slogans or fake compliments. Spirit-prompted words carry power because they flow from God’s heart through healing voices.

Mother Teresa once said, “Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.” I’ve seen it! Years after Dan encouraged me, I found myself running on the deck beside another swimmer at the end of a workout. Same pressure. New swimmer. Same spark. This time, I was the voice God used to lift someone up, “You’ve got this! You can do it!”

God’s Spirit nudges us to notice, care, and speak life. We never know who’s hurting. Look around. Follow God’s lead.  What’s your “good word” today?

Speak Light.  Lift Hearts.

Go:

  1. When you were discouraged, who spoke a “good word” into your life?

  2. How do shallow compliments differ from Spirit-prompted “good words”?

  3. Who in your life might need “good words” today?

Workout:

1 John 3:18
Hebrews 10:24

Overtime:

My Father and my Coach, You know the weight we carry.  Let me be sensitive to those around me who stoop from anxiety, pressure and doubt.  Let my words lift their weight and bring healing.  And when I stoop, deliver me through the good words of a true friend.  In Jesus' name, amen
