Ready:
“Whoever is faithful in very little is also faithful in much, and whoever is unrighteous in very little is also unrighteous in much.” – Luke 16:10
Set:
Have you ever been given a task from the coach that felt so insignificant it was almost insulting? Maybe the coach told you to pick up the trash in the locker room, to fill up the water bottles or wash them out because mold was starting to grow. Maybe the coach asked you to keep stats while the team competed. What if instead of being offended at such “lowly tasks”, you were thankful because it was growing you to be a faithful teammate in the larger tasks?
Anytime I struggle with a position, I always try to think of Jesus. The Son of God, the King of the Universe was born in a manger, wrapped in swaddling clothes. Not even a full blanket, but strips of cloth. And yet that was enough for Jesus. He didn’t see Himself too highly to demand a king’s birth or even a king’s upbringing. His parents were young and poor, and yet it was enough for Him. We don’t have much knowledge of His life as a young boy, but I wonder how much of His days were filled with boring mundane tasks. How many of those tasks did His flesh balk at, and yet His Spirit walked humbly in them with joy and discipline. Nothing was too small for Jesus to be faithful in.
I don’t believe He was offended at any task; I believe He chose to be thankful in every task. Even as He grew up and began His ministry, He stooped down to do the lowly thing of washing His disciples’ feet. I can imagine the love and joy in His eyes and the care in His hands as He gently washed their dirty, calloused feet. Such a small, somewhat even offensive lowly task and yet He did it with all His heart. May we all look for Christ when we struggle with our position in this world. We will always be in good company when we are doing the small things, for Christ is nearby.
Go:
What small thing has God given you to be faithful in?
How might you see Christ in it today?
What large things might He trust you with in the future if you’re faithful in the little things of the present?
Workout:
Overtime:
“Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for trusting me with the little things. I pray You will help me to see what an honor it is to be trusted with such small things; help me to be faithful in the roles, tasks and resources You have given me to steward. May I steward them well on my team, with my friends, in my family, and with whoever else You might send my way. When I get frustrated, please help me to remember Jesus and how even He was faithful in the mundane things of life. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
