“But have nothing to do with pointless and silly myths. Rather, train yourself in godliness. For the training of the body has limited benefit, but godliness is beneficial in every way, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.” –1 Timothy 4:7-8

A Christ-following coach tells his players, “Don’t ever let the light on you become brighter than the light in you.” This advice reflects the difference between living outside in—allowing external factors to determine our perspectives, choices, and actions—and living inside out. To live inside out is to have the internal transforming work of Jesus Christ, the light of the world (John 8:12), shape us and grow us in godliness. In his book The Practice of Godliness, Jerry Bridges defines godliness as “Christian character that springs from devotion to God…which results in a life that is pleasing to Him.” In 1 Timothy 4:7-8, Paul says that “godliness in beneficial in every way,” both now and in the future.
How do you make sure the light of Jesus’ work within you shines brightest—especially in the midst of the pressures of competition? “Train yourself in godliness.” Similar to effective physical training, developing Christ-like character includes these basic elements: plan, practice and persevere.
Just as effective physical training involves following a plan rather than taking a haphazard approach, have an intentional plan for how you’ll grow in the character qualities that spring from devotion to God. Christ-like character comes from knowing Christ more deeply, so create and follow a plan for spending time with Jesus. Also similar to physical training, training for godliness only produces results through consistent practice. With the Spirit’s empowering, you develop Christ-like character qualities such as integrity when day by day you practice integrity in every situation—even when it might feel advantageous to compromise your integrity.
Finally, persevere in adopting a “no days off” attitude toward practicing Christ-like character. Push through the obstacles and setbacks that come. Be unwavering in living out Christ-like character no matter what those around you may be doing. As you do so, the light of Jesus’ work within you will shine brightly as you compete and live, bringing honor to Him.
