Excellence

Terry Steiner - USA Wrestling Women's National Coach

READY:

“The Lord is my strength of my shield; my heart trusts in him, and I am helped. Therefore my heart celebrates, and I give thanks to him with my song.” — Psalm 28:7

SET:

For as long as I remember, I grew up in a home where faith and religion were the centerpiece of our lives.  My siblings and I grew up with very hard working, loving parents.  We were always surrounded by an extended family and grandparents that helped nurture us through childhood and adolescence.  We grew up in a strong Christian Catholic family!  We went to church daily and were always reminded to keep the Lord Jesus Christ front and center in our lives.

As a coach of the USA Women’s Freestyle National and Olympic Teams, I have tried to do the same thing in my personal and professional life. I know that I cannot be successful and fulfilled without Christ in my life. Coaches and athletes go through a lot of ups and downs during a competitive career keeping the Lord Jesus Christ at the forefront helps me to stay centered in my life.  It is how to coach and compete with excellence.

Wins and losses come and go.  Moments are fleeting. Living a life as a coach (or an athlete), you must be able to withstand the numerous stressful and heartbreaking moments.  The process of becoming excellent is filled with a lot of situations that cannot be explained.  I believe that we are all on a path that only God knows.  I choose to put my faith and trust in him.

I know that being a person of faith does not mean I will have a road without obstacles, it just means, that I believe that my strength is not my own.  I know that I am a child of God and that no matter what happens, no matter what the result, God will help me through life as it comes my way! These truths give me the strength to coach with excellence.
